RAF Lakenheath Runway Core Sample Drilling

RAF Lakenheath Runway

RAF Lakenheath has been an airfield since the first world war when it was a Royal Flying Corps base. Since 1952 it has been home to the United States Air force 48th Fighter Wing also known as the Liberty Wing which today consists of 3 combat ready squadrons of F-15E Strike Eagle and F-15C Eagle aircraft supported by 5,700 personnel.

During Desert Storm the 2nd Gulf War CODICUTS were requested by Fitzpatricks working for the Ministry of Defence to take core samples from the air bases runway and taxi ways together with drilling holes for new runway landing lights. Work was timed around aircraft stories and our staff had to work within the strict security measures of an airbase operating under the conditions of war.
